Emergency & Casualty

Emergency department software that does not slow the door down

Casualty is the one place where software has to get out of the way. A patient arriving unconscious cannot wait for a full registration form, and a nurse deciding who is seen next cannot be reading a list sorted by arrival time. Uyirly registers in seconds, sorts by how sick people are, and carries everything forward if they are admitted.

What emergency department software has to do

Casualty has a different shape from every other department. Patients arrive without appointments, often without documents and sometimes without a name. Order of treatment is decided by how unwell somebody is, not by when they walked in. And a sizeable fraction of what happens has to be carried into an admission a few minutes later. Software that treats the ER as OPD with a different label fails at all three.

Registration fast enough to use

The measure of ER registration is whether staff use it during a bad night or write on paper and enter it afterwards. Anything that demands an address and an ID before treatment can begin will lose.

An unknown patient still gets a record

A patient brought in unconscious with nobody accompanying them is registered immediately and identified later. The record exists from the first minute, which is what lets the drugs given and the tests ordered attach to something.

Arrival mode, recorded

How the patient arrived — walk-in, ambulance, referred, brought by police — is part of the case, and it is the first thing a medico-legal question asks about.

Existing patients are found, not duplicated

If the patient already has a UHID, the case attaches to it, so their allergies and history are there rather than starting an empty second record for the same person.

Triage, on five levels

The casualty board sorts by triage level, not arrival time. Uyirly uses a five-level scale, the same shape as the Emergency Severity Index that most Indian hospitals train on: level 1 is resuscitation and level 5 is non-urgent. The point of a scale is not the numbers. It is that a nurse can re-triage a patient who has been waiting and deteriorating, and the board re-sorts by itself — which is the failure that kills people in waiting rooms.

LevelMeansOn the board
1Resuscitation — immediateTop, always
2Emergent — minutes matterAbove everything below it
3UrgentMiddle, ordered by wait
4Less urgentBelow urgent cases
5Non-urgentBottom, seen when the floor clears

The case, from door to outcome

Every case has a status, so at any moment the board answers who is waiting, who is being treated, and who has gone where.

  1. 1

    Waiting

Registered and triaged, not yet seen. Sorted by level.

  2. 2

    In treatment

A doctor has taken the case, and is named on it.

  3. 3

    Resolved

    Discharged, referred elsewhere, or admitted.

  4. 4

    Admitted

Carried into IPD as the same patient, with the ER charges already on the bill.

Money, without slowing anything down

Casualty leaks revenue more reliably than any other department, because charges happen during an emergency and get written down afterwards if at all. Uyirly captures the ER registration fee — set once, applied automatically — and lets charges be added to the case as they are used. If the patient is admitted, those charges go onto the admission bill instead of being a separate paper slip that may or may not reach the cashier. If they are discharged from casualty, the bill is already complete.

Admission without retyping

The handover from casualty to a ward is where most systems make somebody enter the patient a second time. In Uyirly an emergency case is admitted directly: the same patient, the same record, with the ER visit, its charges and whatever was ordered already attached. What happens next is covered under IPD admission and bed management, and for a patient who goes to critical care, ICU with NEWS scoring.

Frequently asked questions

Which plan includes the emergency module?

Growth and Enterprise. Emergency sits with full IPD, which is a Growth feature.

Can we register a patient whose name we do not know?

Yes. An unidentified patient is registered immediately and the details are completed later. The record exists from the first minute so treatment and charges have something to attach to.

What triage scale does Uyirly use?

A five-level scale, the same shape as the Emergency Severity Index — level 1 resuscitation through level 5 non-urgent. The casualty board sorts by level, and re-sorts when a waiting patient is re-triaged.

Do emergency charges reach the bill automatically?

Yes. The ER registration fee is applied automatically and charges added to the case go to the patient’s bill — onto the admission bill if they are admitted, rather than a separate slip.

Can a casualty patient be admitted without re-registering?

Yes. The case is admitted directly into a ward as the same patient, carrying the ER visit and its charges with it.
