ICU & Critical Care

ICU software that notices before the round does

The danger in a critical care unit is rarely that nobody recorded the observations. It is that they were recorded, filed, and nobody put them together until the next round. Uyirly scores every set of observations as it is entered and moves anyone deteriorating to the top of a list.

What ICU management software has to do

An intensive care unit already generates more numbers per patient per hour than any other part of a hospital. Software that only stores them has solved the easy half of the problem. The half that matters is turning a stream of observations into the sentence a nurse needs — this patient is worse than they were four hours ago.

NEWS, on every observation

Every set of observations — respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, pulse, temperature and level of consciousness — is scored with NEWS, the National Early Warning Score, as it is entered. Nobody adds it up by hand and nobody forgets to. NEWS matters because it is deliberately simple and widely taught. A score is a number a new nurse, a visiting consultant and a night duty doctor all read the same way, which is exactly what you want at three in the morning.

The deterioration worklist

Critical care patients whose latest score is elevated appear on one list, worst first. It is not a notification that can be dismissed and forgotten — it is a worklist that stays populated until the patient improves or somebody acts.

Fluid balance

Intake and output recorded against the same admission as the observations, so the balance and the score are read together rather than from two different charts on two different clipboards.

Ventilated patients

An admission can be marked as on a ventilator, and FiO₂ is captured with the observations so the oxygen requirement is part of the picture rather than a note in the margin.

A patient in ICU has more than one doctor

This is where most hospital software quietly fails. It assumes one admitting doctor, and then an intensivist, a cardiologist and a surgeon all see the patient and only one of them is on the record.

The care team

Several doctors can be attached to one admission, each with their role. Everyone looking at the chart can see who else is involved, rather than finding out from a nurse.

Consults, requested and tracked

A consult is requested from within the admission and shows up on the receiving doctor’s own list. It is not a phone call that may or may not have happened.

Visits logged against the admission

Each doctor’s visit is recorded — who came, when, and whether the visit is complete. That is the trail a discharge summary is built from, and the one an auditor asks about.

Connected to the rest of the hospital

An ICU bed is also the most expensive bed in the building, and a patient in it is generating lab orders, drugs and consumables continuously. Because the ICU is part of the same system as IPD billing, the charges accumulate daily on the admission instead of being reconstructed at discharge, and the laboratory results that drive the decisions arrive on the same record — straight from the analyzers, if your machines are connected.

Frequently asked questions

What is NEWS and why use it?

NEWS is the National Early Warning Score — a standard way of turning six routine observations into a single number that indicates how unwell a patient is. It is used because it is simple, widely taught, and read the same way by everyone on the ward regardless of seniority.

Is the score calculated automatically?

Yes. It is computed from each set of observations as they are entered. Nobody adds it up by hand, so it is never skipped on a busy shift.

Can more than one doctor be on an ICU admission?

Yes. A care team of several doctors can be attached to one admission, consults can be requested and tracked, and each doctor’s visits are logged against the admission.

Which plan includes ICU?

Growth and Enterprise. ICU sits alongside full IPD, which is a Growth feature.

Does it connect to bedside monitors?

Not today. Observations are entered by nursing staff. We connect laboratory analyzers and imaging scanners, but live monitor feeds are not something we claim.
